Book tag

The first book I remember reading: A fat and huge and red coloured dictionary meant for kids…It had LOVELY illustrations , I was three and the only thing I READ was the picture of a cute worm that was sticking out his head in A for APPLE….

The book that my parents asked me NOT to read and I read: They had a problem with my reading Hindi trash like Gulshan Nanda etc…and now papa helped me buy the same trash for some ‘official’ work that I had.
Also mummy categorically asked me to stay away from Kumarsambhavam, a play by Kalidas…not that I cared about his writings but because she asked me not to, I had too…the reason…it is about the relationship of Shiva and Parvati…the ideal husband and wife couple according to the Hindu Mythology and the 8th chapter in the play descibes their love making…with the sounds and the love bites…I was about 14 then…and it felt good to see that Indians especially gods also made love.

Book I associate most with love, for whatever reason:
The answer should be any Gulzar books as I look for all my love dilemmas in his books but lets be honest
Kasap by Manohar Shyam Joshi- read it when I was falling in love, at the peak of love, when I was falling out of love and after my break up. Read it like a bible in those three years about 9 times. And each time I looked at it differently.the book is still my bible.
Chitra by Rabindranath Tagore- read it first when I was 12 and even at that time I remember being so moved I cried. And still can’t bear to read it. it is indeed a little non feministic I think but I don’t care.

Book that should have never finished: any book by Shivani and Suvarnalata by Ashapurna Devi. ( This is link to a story by her)

Book I am so embarrassed about liking: Most of Sidney Sheldon books….okay so kill me for intellectual corruption…
and also added with a… gulp … both the volumes of Bridget Jones Diary.

Book I am so embarrassed about not liking: None actually but I failed to see what was so cult-ish about Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger …okay sue me…I am ready, or disown me…yes especially the golgappa and the fried fish…see if I care…

One day I will pucca read: Atlas Shrugged and Fountain Head by Ayn Rand…pucca promise.

The most erotic book I have read: changing answer slyly, Mitro Marjaani by Krishna Sobti, here is a link to my other blog where i spoke about the book

I could't sleep for nights after reading: Dastavez, Volume one by Manto. For the uninitiated, he wrote extensively about brothels and riots, 1947 riots that is . Do read Khol Do and Kali Salwar.
Also Weekend by Nirmal Verma, disturbing is the mildest word that you can use for his writings.

I can never finish reading, though have tried many times: The Fountain Head by Ayn Rand…kill me, I am a kaafir

I bought recently:
The first three parts of St. Clares, by Enid Blyton

My wish list (3 books allowed):
Selected poems of Sylvia Plath.
The Sandman: Book of Dreams by Neil Gaimon (currently reading it bit by bit at Landmark, every alternate day…it is expensive…okay?)
Tarkash by Javed Akhtar

and and and chaatpaapdi, rambler, aparajita and easelworks are tagged.

Manto is quite remarkable, is he not? There are some stories of his which are available online too, if you want I can give you the links.

And yes, I don;t know how old are you but beyond certain age Rand is useless.

cheers

I condemn you personally. How can you not finish The Fountainhead? How could you even put it down after having started it? Its the most amazing book I've ever read.

Although I agree Atlas Shrugged is tougher to get started on.

Also would like to express my disgust and honest revulsion at this -
"Book I am so embarrassed about liking: Most of Sidney Sheldon books….okay so kill me for intellectual corruption…
and also added with a… gulp … both the volumes of Bridget Jones Diary."

Looking from another side, it must have taken you some guts to actually say this. So you should get a pat in the back for that. Give yourself one.

Hey fellow-book-lover...nice post. I could immediately identify with two things...not going ga-ga over The Catcher in the Rye and not being able to finish The Fountainhead. Count me in the kafir club :) BTW, this Zoya here...and Sighing Zoya does have a blog...do visit... :) http://zoyasmusings.rediffblogs.com

Hi Miss(?) Nandini,
I have to say, just roaming across orkut I happened to go through your profile, your blogs, and Nandini I should say I am totally overwhelmed to even notice a person like you having such inundating thoughts and such deep thought process, amazing you are and your thoughts. I am truly impressed. Never in my life I had ever come across a person like you. though unlike you I never read novels and stuff talking about life etc. But what I can make out of your lifestyle, your mindset you are a gem in your being, I suppose your are very clandestine in your existence, and I am totally into it. Will you gimme a chance to demistify your persona just for my satisfaction. I hope and whatever I understand from the kinda of personality being reflected from your profile so far you mght gimme a chance, alas I will say just be assured you will witness a person who has thought even deeper but through personal experiences. I instantly added you as my friend. I am an introvert in general!!-Vivek

Books I loved reading(off the top of my head and mostly pertaining to those mentioned above)-
ALL the books mom told me not to ;)
and kept hidden away.
Some great literature though and various styles of writing.
Everything from Shivani and Premchand and Mahabharat and Parv to a constant fodder of English classical and modern writing.Add to the list Indian writers in English.
Also add to the list, unabashedly,"trashy" Sheldon and the usual paperbacks.
Book I loathed(and the only book where I've skipped fifty pages in a go,several times)-
The Fountainhead
A GREAT book edited in an apalling manner.(LOVED parts I did)
Book I couldn't get past the first few pages of-Catch 22.Something about that one just does not appeal to me.
Book I LOVED-Catcher in the Rye

I agree with your comment on FOUNTAINHEAD. I read it when I was 17 and found it tedious. I believe it is NOT worth reading such a huge text- to infer a simple message on objectivism.

Friedrich Nietzsche would have conveyed the whole message in one paragrah while Ayn Rand took hundreds of pages.

Don't even try reading it- just a waste of time!

super blog. Not finishing fountainhead is sacrilege! he he .. my hindi reading is pathetic, so hence can not comment about Gulzar (I read some detective ones by Surendra Mohan Pathak though with great difficulty) .. Chitra is a super one. What about "Shesher Kobita"? 2 books that I could never finish are "Catch 22" and "Godel Escher Bach". :)
